Loneliness

Article Presented by:
Joyce C. Lock

Loneliness is everywhere around us, sometimes within us, and is often responded to with, "If you want a friend, make yourself friendly" (taken from Pr. 18:24).

We gulp, give it a try, and conclude it does not work.

Scripture always works when properly applied. Perhaps we are friendly for what we can get out of it (Ja. 4:3), or we take the meaning too lightly.

Jesus is our best model of what a friend could and should be. In all the ways He has loved us, we are to love each other (Jn. 15:12). There is not much room for loneliness when our vessel is filled with love.

All it takes is enough compassion to be the difference (Jude 22) and, in so doing, we can not out give God (Lu. 6:38). In staying the course, we may also find the desires of our heart (Ps. 37:3-4) and to have both found and become a friend like Jesus. The most beautiful part being that we would have become a best friend to Jesus, caring more about the desires of His heart than ours. And when we walk with Him, we are and are being made complete.

Not forgetting we are also human, why not give others a break and love them anyway? Then, when they don't receive, just shake the dust off your feet and try again another day. But better yet, seek those in need. It could just be that the desire of their heart is the same as yours ~ to have a friend like Jesus.

Now who could resist that?

I HAVE BEEN A TRUE FRIEND WHEN I HAVE ...

Loved as my own soul (De. 13:6). Taken time to get to know them. Been trustworthy. Both shared and ate spiritual manna (Ps. 41:9). Loved at all times (Pr. 17:17). Stuck closer than a brother (Pr. 18:24). Been faithful even when wounded (Pr. 27:6). Given hearty counsel (Pr. 27:9). Been available when trouble comes (Pr. 27:10). Sought to bring out the best in them (Pr. 27:17). Believed God (Ja. 2:23).

No matter the problem, we will find our way when we choose to believe God.

Preventing Diabetes with Tea

Article Presented by:
Marcus Stout

Our country is becoming more and more concerned with Type II diabetes, particularly as the rate of obesity climbs. We need to be concerned with ways to prevent diabetes in both our adults and in children. We know that weight maintenance, diet and exercise are critical to preventing diabetes, but research is showing that there may be other things we can do to prevent diabetes, too.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, the hormone that converts sugar and other food into energy. The most common type of diabetes seen today is Type II, where insulin is produced (though sometimes not in a high enough quantity), but is not used properly, resulting in a high level of blood glucose in the body. Type I diabetes is diagnosed in childhood, and results from an inability to produce insulin.

Doctors are not entirely sure of the cause of diabetes, but we do know that people who are obese and who do not get regular exercise are at a much greater risk of developing Type II diabetes than those who exercise and maintain a healthy weight.

Today, there are about 20.8 million people in the US with diabetes, and nearly one third of them don't even know they have the disease. In addition, about 54 million people in the US are pre-diabetic, meaning their blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. Complications from diabetes include blindness, cataracts, kidney problems, heart disease, stroke, nerve damage and foot and skin problems.

In addition to losing weight and getting regular exercise, it appears that drinking green tea may also help prevent diabetes and its complications. One study, conducted by the University of Scranton conducted studies on diabetic mice to determine the effects of tea on blood sugar levels. They fed them green and black tea for a period of three months before beginning to evaluate them.

The rats were fed the equivalent of less than 5 cups per day to humans. The study found that both green and black tea decreased blood glucose levels over those of the mice who were not fed tea. These decreased glucose levels had the power to also reduce the complications of diabetes affecting the mice.

For example, the mice that were fed tea were far less likely to have begun to form cataracts, a common complication of diabetes, over the mice that were not fed tea.

This is promising news for those at risk of developing Type II diabetes. Of course, if you're overweight or inactive, it's still critical that you get moving and lose the excess pounds. Maintaining a normal weight and exercising regularly are the two most important steps you can take to preventing diabetes.

But, if drinking tea can help you win the fight, it's certainly a simple step to take. And, this particular study did not show a difference between drinking green tea and black tea.

In recent years, most of the medical research done on tea has focused on green tea, and it has been widely assumed that green tea provides more health benefits than black tea.

This assumption has been made because green tea retains more of its natural anti-oxidants than black tea. Black tea is fermented when it is processed; green tea is not. During this processing, some of the anti-oxidants, namely EGCG are nearly destroyed. Because EGCG is though to be one of the most important anti-oxidants in tea, it has been thought that green tea is far more beneficial than black tea.

However, this does not appear to be the case when it comes to preventing Type II diabetes and its complications. It appears that either type of tea is able to regulate blood sugar naturally. This is certainly good news for those who prefer black tea over green.

If you're concerned about your blood sugar levels, see your doctor. He'll help you to begin a diet that will help your body be more able to regulate its insulin level. He'll also help you to map out an exercise program that can help you lose weight but also one that can help you burn carbohydrates more efficiently right away, helping to regulate your blood sugar immediately.

And, while you're visiting with your doctor, be sure to talk to him about drinking tea. Tea has no known side effects, and is well tolerated by almost everyone. It even has lower caffeine content than coffee and soda. So, there should be no reason why you can't use tea as part of your plan to get your blood sugar level under control and prevent diabetes.

Your health is important and diabetes can be a significant concern. So, take a look at the steps you need to take to prevent diabetes before it ruins your health.

What Makes Tea So Effective At Preventing Heart Disease?

Article Presented by:
Jon M. Stout

Many bodies of research have shown that tea is effective at preventing heart disease in several ways. Tea prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol into plaque, the hard substance that clogs our arteries, making us more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes. Tea is also thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect, which helps the heart in its overall function.

In addition to these two important benefits of drinking tea, there is also evidence that tea consumption reverses endothelial dysfunction, one of the precursors to atherosclerosis and heart disease. Endothelial dysfunction can appear years before heart disease symptoms. Therefore, if we can prevent or reverse this problem, heart disease may be prevented before it starts.

The endothelium is the cells that line the inner surface of all blood vessels including arteries and veins. When the endothelium is functioning properly, it is responsible for mediation of coagulation, platelet adhesion, immune function, and control of volume and electrolyte content of the intravascular and extra vascular spaces.

Endothelial dysfunction can be caused by a variety of things, including cigarette smoking and diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. When the endothelium does not function properly, veins and arteries have difficulty dilating properly.

These problems are thought to be the precursor to atherosclerosis, which is a leading cause of heart disease. However, endothelial dysfunction can be prevented and reversed by watching your diet, exercising and drinking tea.

But, just how does tea help prevent and reverse heart disease? There are many theories, and it's likely that we won't know the exact answer for many more years.

We do know that part of the answer is tea's anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants have the power to neutralize the free radicals that our bodies create as a by product of digestion. These free radicals can damage our bodies and lead to disease; but anti-oxidants can protect us against their damage. Tea is one of the best sources of anti-oxidants around.

There are several substances in tea that are thought to be effective. These include catechins, which are polyphenolic antioxidant plant metabolites, specifically flavonoids called flavan-3-ols. EGCG is the most potent of these.

It has been widely assumed that these catechins are the most important attributes of tea, and that they are the active ingredient that prevents heart disease. But, one research study suggests that it may not be these catechins in tea that are so important, after all.

This study, conducted by Boston University, showed that chronic consumption of these specific catechins in tea did not raise the plasma anti-oxidant activity as expected. However, the tea still had the overall protective effect.

So, this study concluded that it may be some other flavonol in tea that is so effective in preventing endothelial dysfunction and other contributors to heart disease. Or, it may be the combination of all the flavonols in tea that work collectively to provide the protective effect.

Whatever the cause, we know that tea is good for you and that it is effective in preventing many forms of disease, not just heart disease. Tea has also been shown to prevent many forms of cancer, as well as Alzheimer's disease.

Many research studies have shown a connection between tea drinking and cancer. Asian cultures, where green tea is consumed in very large quantities, for example, have a much lower incidence of cancer than the rest of the world. They also have a lower risk for cardiovascular disease – even in Japan, where 75% of the men are smokers.

Tea has been shown to prevent lung cancer even in smokers, and has also been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, digestive system cancer, oral cancer and liver cancer. It has even been shown to be effective in preventing skin cancer when given orally or applied topically.

Tea has also been shown to have a protective effect on brain cells. This means that it may have the power to protect the brain cells from the chemicals in the brain that sometimes damage brain cells, causing Alzheimer's disease.

We don't know why the brain's chemicals sometimes begin to kill off its cells, but there is evidence that tea can prevent this process. So, it's important for all of us to add tea to our diets to protect our health.

It's hard to believe that something so simple, and so common, in our everyday lives could be such an important way to protect our health; yet it appears that tea is just that. Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, after water, and it appears that we should be drinking even more of it.

So, make sure that you're getting your regular dose of tea. Whether it's green or black, hot or cold, brewed or bottled, tea is a great way to protect your health. So, what are you waiting for? Go make yourself a cup of tea!

Can I Add Milk to My Tea?

Article Presented by:
Marcus Stout

One of the most popular trends in staying healthy today is drinking tea. And, with good reason. Research has shown that tea may be highly effective in protecting our health and preventing aging and disease. As research continues, we're learning more and more about the many health benefits of drinking tea.

But, what's all the fuss about tea? Well, it's the anti-oxidants that give tea its disease fighting power. Anti-oxidants are critical to our health, and many of us don't get as many as our bodies need. But, it just so happens that tea contains some of the most effective anti-oxidants you'll ever find.

Anti-oxidants are important because they fight free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are created in our bodies as it converts the food we eat into energy. These free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules that, over time, can damage our cells and our DNA. This damage leads to premature aging and significantly increases our risk of diseases like heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Anti-oxidants work all over our bodies to neutralize these free radicals before they can damage us. For example, the anti-oxidants in tea have been shown to prevent our bad cholesterol (LDLs) from oxidizing. If LDLs don't oxidize, then they don't harden into the plaque that can clog our arterial walls, contributing to heart attacks and strokes.

So, because anti-oxidants are so powerful at protecting our bodies, doctors recommend that we consume a diet high in these important chemicals. For most of us, this means that we need to increase the number of fresh fruits and vegetables we eat. And, we also can get anti-oxidants from other sources like chocolate, coffee, red wine and tea.

Green tea is a preferred source of anti-oxidants because it contains EGCG, one of the most potent anti-oxidants around. EGCG is 100 times more powerful than many vitamins known to be potent anti-oxidants, like Vitamins C and E.

Black tea also contains anti-oxidants, but lacks some of the EGCG that you find in green tea. This is because black tea is fermented during processing. The fermentation process destroys most of the EGCG in the tea leaves. This is why green tea is a more potent anti-oxidant source than black tea.

So, many of us are drinking tea, whether green or black, by the gallon. We're brewing loose leaf tea, using tea bags and buying it bottled. And, when we don't get enough EGCG from drinking our tea, we're taking green tea supplements to get an extra dose.

But, what if we like milk in our tea? This question has come up regularly as people seek to balance the enjoyment of their tea with ensuring that they are getting the maximum health benefit from it.

And, it seems that it's perfectly fine to put milk in your tea. A study reported by the UK Tea Council examined how adding milk affects tea's anti-oxidants. The study reported that the addition of milk to tea had no effect on the tea's anti-oxidant ability. Tea still contained the potent anti-oxidants when the milk was added, and the anti-oxidants had the same effect on the body whether or not the tea contained milk.

So, add milk to your tea if you wish. It's not going to make your tea any less effective. And, if you enjoy your tea more, you may be likely to drink more of it, which we know is good for you.

Much of the reason that so much research has been performed on the effects of tea is due to the far lower incidence in serious diseases in Asian countries, where tea is consumed in large quantities. It appears that all the tea they consume has helped them to have the lowest incidences of cancer and heart disease in the world.

But, Asians drink quite a lot of tea, most of it green. Many Japanese are reported to drink 8-10 cups per day. So, it appears that you should consume a fair quantity of tea if you're consuming it for its health benefits.

Start by trying to include 3 cups in your diet each day. Work up from that amount, if you can. Remember that tea is just as effective iced as it is hot; you can enjoy it any way you like.

And, remember that green tea supplements are also available, if you find that you just can't drink that much tea in a day. These supplements are widely available at drugstores and health food stores.

Tea drinking is one of the healthiest habits you can get into. It's delicious, refreshing and contains less caffeine than coffee or soda. And, tea is available in numerous flavors and forms, making it easy to incorporate some form of it into everyone's diet. Even your children can enjoy tea to give them a head start on good health.

The Web of Tomorrow

Article Presented by:
Jason OConnor

A woman switches on a tiny wireless chip that has been surgically implanted behind her ear, which then synchs up with the Web wherever she is in the world. The simple thought of logging on to the Internet triggers the system to turn on and connect to the Web. She could be on a bus or at the beach and from all outward appearances she's just staring off into space. But she sees a three dimensional artificial world before her that she can manipulate any way she chooses by mere thought alone.

By looking at the trends of today we can begin to develop a image of what the Web of the future will look like. I believe the Web will improve and grow in a way that will dwarf its present existence and will improve and enrich everyone's lives way beyond what we can imagine today. The Net will become as integrated into everyone's everyday lives as much as, and even more so, than the television or phone (in developed nations first, then everywhere). Television, communications and the Internet will merge.

The Web will become increasingly realistic, interactive, and three dimensional. Two dimensional displays will evolve into three dimensional displays. And the Web will probably incorporate more than just the two senses of seeing and hearing. It will first be incorporated into all other electronics found in household appliances, copy machines, automobiles, and anything else with a microchip. Then it will be integrated directly into our brains.

I also envisage this new Web creating an unimaginably sophisticated data sphere that surrounds and envelops the world like a warm electronic blanket, connecting everyone and everything. And it may some day become an autonomous and sentient entity in its own right that we may even come to depend on for life itself.

When a person switches on his wireless Web chip and connects with the Net, he'll be looking at and interacting with the Web of the future. He'll manipulate objects, click on links, download information, and communicate with anyone by simply thinking it. In fact, when he navigates to a grocery store to buy food, for instance, he'll be able to "pick them up", "feel them" and even "smell" the food he wants to buy just by thinking the appropriate thoughts.

In the future, Web-based software agents will constantly build dynamic lists and instructions to help people in personal and professional activities. These software agents are subroutines, or small programs, which may be part of a responsive 'Internet Operating System' that serves humanity, or possibly even destroy it. Programs may become responsible for doing some of the basic thinking that we get stuck routinely doing today. Additionally, it may be responsible for storing a percentage of our memories as well.

The Web has already become something we rely on for memory, and that reliance will only grow. We'd rather look something up on Google two or three times instead of trying to remember it initially. And eventually, we'll come to rely on the Web for memories and immediate information so that it will seem like we are missing a part of our own brain when not "jacked in" to the Net, to borrow a phrase from science fiction writer William Gibson. The Net will be such a part of our existence that we may even feel profound separation and isolation when not connected.

The Evolution of the Web Display

Of course we're not going to jump from flat screen LCD monitors of today to displays that exist only "in our minds". Three dimensional displays may be the bridge. There is a device in existence today called a Heliodisplay(TM) that produces holograms which exist in three dimensions and are created with photographic projection using advanced laser technology. It's possible that all displays will employ this technology in the future. The gaming industry ceaselessly works at making their artificial gaming experiences more realistic and is a powerful driving force in computer display technology.

The Web of our future will first be truly device independent where each piece of equipment is a different window that peers into the same global Web. From handheld devices not unlike the Star Trek Communicators, to cell phones, televisions, automobile dashboards, embedded refrigerator displays and MP3 players, all will be portals into the same World Wide Web.

And of course everything will be connected. Instead of applications running on individual personal computers and devices, applications will operate on the Net and be accessible to anyone, creating a loose Internet Operating System.

Ultimately, the Web of our future will most likely abandon standard two dimensional and even three dimensional displays and instead be projected right onto our corneas, skipping the middle man, so to speak.

FutureWeb is Closer Than We Think

Already demonstrated in the lab is the ability to cause a computer to react to thought alone. Duke University neuroscientist Miguel Nicolelis works in the field of BMI (brain-machine interface). In an experiment involving a monkey, a computer and a monitor, Nicolelis and his team successfully caused the monkey to communicate with and control a robotic arm through its brain's neural signals alone.

The monkey's brain activity and signals were first monitored with numerous electrodes inside its scalp while it manipulated a joystick. The scientists taught the monkey to move the joystick with its arms to accomplish movement on the monitor. Nicolelis' team then took the joystick away, but continued everything else the same way. Since the monkey's brain was hooked up to the computer, each time it had the thought of moving its arms, the desired affect actually happened anyway on the monitor, triggered by the monkey's thoughts alone. In fact, the monkey was even able to control an artificial arm over the Web 600 miles away in the same manner.

There are two important applications for this technology that are driving its research: medicine and war, two constants in all of human history. Doctors will someday be able to attach a prosthetic arm to a patient, wire it up to her brain, and succeed in enabling her to control the prosthetic fingers by simply thinking it.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) manages the research for the U.S. Department of Defense. In 2003, DARPA invested $23 million in BMI programs, including the one at Duke University cited above. Their goal is to allow soldiers to control weapons of all kinds by thought only. These super soldiers will be able to stealthily navigate through a battlefield willing robotic gliders above to drop their payloads of smart bombs on the enemy over the next hill, without endangering their own lives.

Ethical questions aside, brain-machine interfacing will someday mature and become integrated into our lives. Since the Web is already such a part of our world, the marriage of the two is inevitable.

This technology can be utilized in the other direction as well. Just like a thought can produce computer behavior, the computer will someday be able to send back sensory data other than just sight and sound. If a computer is hooked directly up to the brain, then smell, taste and touch can be affected as well. The Web will literally come to life.

The Semantic Web, Web 2.0 and the Collaboration of Humanity

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web, wrote an illuminating book called Weaving the Web that I recommend all Web professionals read. Among the many profound ideas expressed are two concepts relevant here. One is the Semantic Web, which is explained as "The Web of data with meaning in the sense that a computer program can learn enough about what the data means to process it." Metadata is the term used for data about data. Most Web pages today have embedded in the html code metadata that gives information about the Web page. Eventually, this information will become much more robust, allowing more intelligent searches to become a reality.

The Semantic Web may have the potential to help make the Internet an entity in its own right. Parallel processing, the connecting of computers to make super computers, has been in existence for some time now. In fact, that's how the human brain operates, by conducting many operations at the same time.

The other fascinating idea Berners-Lee expressed in this landmark book is that his original idea for the Web involved much more of a two-way exchange of information. His original vision for the Web was one of collaboration. He wanted people to be able to post information to the Web as easily as it was to view information. Unfortunately, the latter has been embraced more readily by the general population.

But now we see the emergence of "Web 2.0", a fairly new term that describes an innovative type of website that is built on the participation of its users. Blogs, wikis Podcasts and social networks all fall under the Web 2.0 umbrella. Today we are finally achieving what Berners-Lee had in mind all along. With websites such as MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, Squidoo, and Digg, non-technical users can now post information and contribute to the Web as easily as they can access it. The Web of the future will embrace this concept even more, causing its speed of growth to eclipse today's rate.

It's not difficult to see that the Web could be a vast parallel processing farm, that given enough artificial intelligence programming, the infusion of Semantic Web systems, and the constant additions from billions of intelligent beings (namely humans), it could have the potential of becoming something of a unified intelligence, a data sphere that surrounds the planet and is more powerful that the sum of its parts.

This concept of technology's exponential growth turning onto something we cannot even imagine with the possibility of the Web becoming sentient is not new. Vernor Vinge, a retired Professor of Mathematics at San Diego State University, a computer scientist and a science fiction author, wrote about the Singularity in a 1993 essay.

A super-intelligence emerging out of the Web was also written about by Kevin Kelly in Wired Magazine in August 2005 and also published on KurzweilAI.com.

". . . we are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on Earth. The precise cause of this change is the imminent creation by technology of entities with greater than human intelligence.

This planet-sized computer is comparable in complexity to a human brain. Both the brain and the Web have hundreds of billions of neurons (or Web pages). Each biological neuron sprouts synaptic links to thousands of other neurons, while each Web page branches into dozens of hyperlinks. That adds up to a trillion "synapses" between the static pages on the Web. The human brain has about 100 times that number-but brains are not doubling in size every few years. The Machine [the Web of the future] is."

An online search will yield many examples of bizarre concepts that existed only in science fiction later becoming reality. The Web is something that Earth has never seen before. It not only has the potential to connect everyone, but it can also extend every brain and grow exponentially. It may take a lot longer than anyone thinks, but eventually the Web of our future will be immensely different and much more powerful than anyone can possibly imagine today.

Changing the Way We See the World with Dr. Nick Begich

Host: Dr. Nick BegichWebsite: www.earthpulse.comResearch provided by: The Lay Institute on Technology, Inc. (www.layinstitute.org)Time: Weekdays, Monday through Friday, 5:00 - 7:00PM Eastern Time

From the invention of the wheel to where we are right now technology will double every ten months. At this rate of change there is little time to consider the consequences, much less create solutions, for what we are facing in the future. These new technologies will either free us to our individual higher potentials, as created human beings, or enslave us to the devices of the elite and corporately corrupt governments around the world. In true democracies and democratic republics the average person controls the destiny of nations. In the 21st Century it is technologies that define the strength and power of nations. This radio program is about the issues that will return power to people through education, applied technology and frank discussion of new technologies, planetary stewardship, responsibility and most importantly the opportunity to create real change in the directions we are otherwise headed. It is time for an awakening of the spirit within each of us that has the potential to reclaim our birthright as created human beings. Created in the image of our Creator - It is time to remember who we are and the directions we want our world, nations and communities to go.

Dr. Nick Begich is Executive Director of The Lay Institute on Technology, Inc. a Texas non-profit corporation and is the co-owner of Earthpulse Press Incorporated. He is the eldest son of the late United States Congressman from Alaska, Nick Begich Sr., and political activist Pegge Begich. He is well known in Alaska for his own political activities. He was twice elected President of both the Alaska Federation of Teachers and the Anchorage Council of Education. Ken McElroy was shot to death on the main street of Skidmore, Missouri, on the morning of July 10, 1981. He was sitting in his pickup, his wife at his side, when two gunmen across the street opened fire. Forty-five men witnessed the killing. After three grand jury investigations, including a federal probe in Kansas City, no indictments were issued. Twenty-five years later, still no one has been charged. McElroy was the "town bully," who had terrorized all of northwest Missouri for twenty-five years. The consensus in the community was that since the law couldn't handle McElroy, there was little choice but to take care of it themselves.

The story of Ken McElroy's reign of terror, his killing, and the ensuing silence was the subject of my first book, In Broad Daylight. (The book won an Edgar Award and was made into a movie.) I am often asked how I managed to get the story, to convince the townspeople to open up, when there were killers still in their midst and the locals were so determined not to give them up. After all, Rolling Stone and Playboy did stories, and they were for the most part shallow, sensationalist pieces. Sixty Minutes got on it early, but the story was not in depth. Another book was written, and it was so bad that it passed largely unnoticed. The people didn't trust outsiders, and I was an outsider.

One thing that helped was that I was from a small town in north central Nebraska, and I mentioned that whenever I got a chance. Another was that I assured the locals that I wasn't out to solve the crime; I had no intention of naming the killers in the book. Which was true; the first time around I really wasn't that interested in establishing the identity of the killers. In fact, there never seemed much debate as to who were on the guns. From the day I arrived, I heard the same two or three names.

Another key thing was the amount of time I spent in the town. Most media types blew in, dug around for a week or two, and then split for New Jersey or LA, or wherever they were from. I was there off and on for five years. People got used to seeing me around. It's hard to shut the door in someone's face when you've talked weather or bean prices with him at the coffee shop or sang hymns next to him in church. The people began to take me seriously.

I also had a lot of conversations with the locals in which McElroy's name never came up. If I were at a tractor pull or a bake sale, I would get into the flow of the event and never mention the killing. Sometimes the locals were the first to mention it. At a dog show at a small town east of Skidmore, a fellow came up to me and whispered that over by the edge of the water was McElroy's wife's father, whom I had never met. Others became interested in the book and provided what assistance they could, albeit often scrumptiously.

The real break came, however, when I was adopted by the Goslees, a successful and highly respected local farm family. A common technique of anthropologists studying foreign cultures is to try to connect with one of the leaders of the community. If the chief, or one of the deputies, accepted you, others were suddenly a lot more willing to talk to you. There were four Goslee sons in the area, and they all had separate groups of friends, and they all introduced me to them with a stamp of approval. By the way, I did a lot of work in the bars; booze does loosen people's tongue. The only problem was, I had to get loaded right along with them. Try typing up your notes at 2 a.m., after a long night of beer and shots at the local tavern.

By the time I left, I felt more a member of the community of Skidmore than I did my own town of Denver. I go back often to see friends and acquaintances. If there was one lesson I learned, and would pass on, it's that most people don't like being rude to others. It was up to me to find a way that allowed them to be nice to me. By the time I left that little town I was selling tickets to the Mother's Day bizarre and judging dance contests at the annual Punkin' Show. It was a long way from when I first showed up and doors were slammed in my face and curses muttered behind my back.

I listened and took notes and came back a month later and asked more questions, and came back six months later and asked more questions. Patience and persistence were the key. That and the realization that nobody in this world believes that they're listened to enough. People know when you're really listening to them, and I listened.

Does Competition Knot up YOUR Nylons?

Article Presented by:
Kim Duke

I have this quote taped right to my desk credenza.

"You'll never reach your destination if you stop to throw stones at every dog that barks." - Sir Winston Churchill

It can happen so easily.

You see, hear, read about your competition and you can almost feel your nylons getting knotted up.

Not too comfortable is it honey?

Sir Winston definitely nailed it on the head.

If you spend all your time being REACTIVE to competition then guess what?

You're not being proactive. Not innovative. Not staying true to your course. Not being a leader.

Like I said - " You're all "NOT-TED" Up!"

Unfortunately when your customer sees you doing this - they think you are more interested in being a copycat than an original. Meow.

Here's A Little Quiz To See If Your Competitors KNOT You Up:

1. You have that "sinking feeling" when you are at the same networking function.

2. You have a head-ache when you see their booth at a tradeshow.

3. You feel nauseated when you see them in the media.

4. You check out their website obsessively.

5. You are over-sensitive when their name gets mentioned.

6. You bad-mouth them to your customers. (this is really BAD by the way!!)

7. You drop your prices to get their customer's business.

If the butterflies went off in your stomach for ANY of the above points - then girl - your nylons are knotted up!

And you're wasting your time, energy and brain power worrying about what you can't control.

Hey - here's a thought!

You know something your competition doesn't have?

YOU.

You and your customers have a relationship that can't be copied by a competitor.

It isn't about dropping your rates. Or choking on your toast when you see your competitor in the paper.

Here's Some Bossy Sales Diva Advice:

Look for the grain of truth that bugs you.

Are they doing something MUCH BETTER than you? Doing something you may not even have thought of?

Well - don't copy their idea (that's just cheesy) - copy the innovative thinking instead. Instead of getting all knotted up - get FIRED UP and ask yourself " What could I do to improve my products and services that would make me UNIQUE?"

It's a tough question that may require pots of coffee while you're thinking. But it is a heck of much better way to spend your time - thinking about YOUR BUSINESS and YOUR CUSTOMERS.

Wouldn't you agree?

Your Diva Fun-Work? Take a good look at your competition and what they are doing RIGHT and challenge yourself to improve in another area.

Remember. Your competitor isn't wrecking your expensive DKNY pantyhose. YOU ARE.

Is Your Thyroid Making You Fat?

Article Presented by:
DBA AdPro Media Sales, All Rights Reserved Written by: Kamau Austin

You might wonder if your thyroid is to blame for your excess weight. In fact there are a number of questions which require answers when the subject of thyroid disease arises. Some of the common questions you should seek answers to include:

  • Have you been to the doctor yet?
  • Will thyroid hormone treatments help you achieve your ideal weight?
  • Are there risks associated with thyroid treatments
  • Can herbal supplements help?

This article will examine each of these questions in detail. In answering these questions we hope to enlighten you about the severity of thyroid disease as well as the potential treatments as well as the risks associated with these treatments.

Have You Been to the Doctor Yet?

The most important consideration when you are concerned about thyroid disease is when you are going to visit a doctor. A trip to the doctor to determine whether or not thyroid disease is present is extremely important and should be one of the first steps you take if you suspect thyroid disease. Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain, fatigue, depression, forgetfulness, dry hair, dry skin, sensitivity to cold, heavy menstrual periods and constipation. Some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism include nervousness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, sensitivity to heat, weight loss and moist palms.

If you are experiencing several of these symptoms a trip to the doctor to discuss the possibility of thyroid disease is definitely warranted. Your doctor can perform a simple blood test to determine whether or not thyroid disease in the form of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism is present. Once the condition is diagnosed a treatment program can be designed to rectify the hormone levels and help you lose any excess weight caused by the condition.

Will Thyroid Hormone Treatments Help You Achieve Your Ideal Weight?

Whether you are suffering from hyperthyroidism and a loss of weight or hypothyroidism and a weight gain, you might wonder if thyroid hormone treatment can help you to achieve your ideal weight. This is a rather difficult question to answer because the subject of weight and thyroid function is rather complicated.

The American Thyroid Association discusses the subject of using thyroid hormones for the purpose of weight loss in the following statement, "Thyroid hormones have been used as a weight loss tool in the past. Many studies have shown that excess thyroid hormone treatment can help produce more weight loss than can be achieved by dieting alone. However, once the excess thyroid hormone is stopped, the excess weight loss is usually regained." This statement alludes to the use of thyroid hormone to stimulate weight loss but also implies weight gain is likely to follow when the treatment ends. If you are considering hormone treatments for the purpose of losing weight you should be aware that the hormone treatments will likely only reduce the amount of weight caused by the hormonal imbalance. Any additional weight will require a diet and exercise program to eliminate the excess weight.

Are There Risks Associated with Thyroid Treatments

There are risks associated with just about any treatment plans and thyroid treatments are no exception. One risk which must always be considered is overcorrection of the problem. If you suffer from hypothyroidism, or a lack of thyroid hormone, your treatment could cause the opposite condition. This condition is known as hyperthyroidism, or excessive thyroid hormone. The American Thyroid Association explains additional risks by stating, "Furthermore, there may be significant negative consequences from the use of thyroid hormone to help with weight loss, such as the loss of muscle protein in addition to any loss of body fat. Pushing the thyroid hormone dose to cause thyroid hormone levels to be elevated is unlikely to significantly change weight and may result in other metabolic problems."

    Can Herbal Supplements Help?

You might wonder if there are herbal supplements which can assist you in obtaining your weight loss goals by regulating the amount of thyroid hormone in your system. There are herbal supplements such as Thyvox which can be used for this purpose. Visiting the following website will help you to learn more about Thyvox and how you can use it to achieve your weight loss goals: www.Thyvox.com. It is important to carefully review this website and other sources to learn as much as you can about the supplement before you make the decision to start using it.

  • Understanding Thyroid Function

    Article Presented by:
DBA AdPro Media Sales, All Rights Reserved Written by: Kamau Austin

The thyroid is a small gland located on the windpipe which primarily regulates the metabolism. However, many other bodily functions are controlled by the thyroid. Growth, fertility, body temperature, cholesterol levels, appetite, brain function, memory, vision and coordination are all influenced by the function of the thyroid. However, if you are like most women you are mostly concerned with the connection between thyroid and metabolism. This is because an under active thyroid has been associated with small weight gains. The American Thyroid Association describes this weight loss as follows, "Since the BMR in the patient with hypothyroidism is decreased, an under active thyroid is generally associated with some weight gain. The weight gain is often greater in those individuals with more severe hypothyroidism."

Although the thyroid may serve a variety of different purposes, most women concern themselves with the functions related to metabolism and how it can contribute to weight gain. If you are one of these women you should consult your physician to determine whether or not your weight loss program is being deterred by thyroid disease such as hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include fatigue, depression, forgetfulness, dry hair, brittle nails, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, heavy menstrual flow and constipation. Your doctor can perform a simple blood test which can determine whether or not your thyroid is functioning properly. If your thyroid is deemed to be problematic he can prescribe a treatment plan to rectify the condition. However, if your thyroid is not malfunctioning your doctor may be able to recommend a weight loss program which will assist you in achieving your weight loss goals.

Managing Thyroid Function for Weight Loss

Women who are diagnosed with hypothyroidism can manage their weight loss by undergoing treatment to correct the thyroid hormone levels in the blood. The primary reason for treating these conditions is to correct metabolic problems and prevent serious problems such as loss of muscle proteins. However, for many women there is an added bonus of losing some excess weight. The amount of weight gain which is associated with hypothyroidism is typically rather minimal and may only amount to 5-10 pounds. However, these pounds can be difficult to lose with only ordinary diet and exercise. Once the thyroid hormone level is normalized the weight caused by the deficient thyroid hormone levels is typically shed rather quickly.

    Combing Thyroid Treatment with Exercise

For a truly effective weight loss program in the presence of thyroid disease it is worthwhile to consider combining thyroid hormone treatment with an exercise program and a healthy diet. According to the American Thyroid Association, "Massive weight gain is rarely associated with hypothyroidism. In general, 5-10 pounds of body weight may be attributable to the thyroid, depending on the severity of the hypothyroidism." For those who are significantly overweight, the amount of weight caused by the deficient thyroid is considered minimal.

Correcting the thyroid hormone levels in the blood will likely result in a weight loss of 5-10 pounds but will not likely directly result in additional weight loss beyond this amount. For this reason it is very important to be sure you are eating a proper diet and exercising regularly. These additional measures will help you to lose any additional weight once the thyroid hormone levels are corrected.

Using Herbal Supplements to Fight Thyroid Disease

The use of herbal supplements to fight thyroid disease and lose weight can be effective for some women. If you are considering the use of supplements to help you regulate your thyroid hormone levels and achieve your weight loss goals, you should investigate Thyvox. The website: www.Thyvox.com provides more information on Thyvox which can help you to determine if this herbal supplement is right for you.

Diagnosing yourself and using over the counter herbal supplements to treat yourself is not recommended. If you suspect thyroid disease is present you should confirm this with your doctor and discuss treatment options with him. He may recommend the use of supplements in a prescribed manner. Taking these supplements under the direction of a doctor is significantly safer than using them without a doctor's consent because the doctor can make you aware of possible risks as well as the potential for complications when the supplements are taken with other medications.

Stabilizing Thyroid Function for Optimal Weight

    Article Presented by:
DBA AdPro Media Sales, All Rights Reserved Written by: Kamau Austin

For many women thyroid function is a legitimate concern. It could cause both an increase and a decrease in weight depending on the current state of the thyroid function. Thyroid disease may exist as either an excessive production of thyroid hormone or a deficient production of thyroid hormone. The increase or decrease in weight will usually be closely associated with the severity of the condition. Severe cases of excessive thyroid hormone will result in a more significant weight loss than mild cases while a severe case of deficient thyroid hormone will result in a more significant weight gain than a mild case. This article will explain hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism and will also discuss the prevalence of thyroid disease and how herbal supplements can be used to treat thyroid disease.

    Understanding Hypothyroidism

Women who have difficulty losing weight may be concerned about the function of their thyroid. This is because a condition such as hypothyroidism can contribute to small weight gains as well as difficulty in losing weight. Hypothyroidism is a form of thyroid disease in which the thyroid does not produce a sufficient amount of the thyroid hormone.

If you suspect hypothyroidism may be contributing to your inability to lose weight, consult your doctor to be tested for this condition. With a simple blood test your doctor can determine whether or not there is a lack of the thyroid hormone in your system. A severe deficiency of the hormone can result in approximately ten pounds of excess weight. This weight will likely be the result of water retention and should dissipate rather quickly once treatment to correct the hormone levels begins. The American Thyroid Association categorizes the weight loss associated with treating hypothyroidism by stating, "Since much of the weight gain in hypothyroidism is accumulation in salt and water, when the hypothyroidism is treated one can expect a small (usually less than 10% of body weight) weight loss."

    Understanding Hyperthyroidism

Most women think of hypothyroidism when they are concerned about losing weight but hyperthyroidism is an equally dangerous condition. Hyperthyroidism can result in weight loss which stems from the overproduction of the thyroid hormone. This hormone regulates the metabolism and too much of the hormone can elevate the metabolism to a level which can result in weight loss.

If you are considering treatment options which create an elevated level of thyroid hormone in the blood it is important to note this can be quite dangerous and can create more problems than it solves. Some of the problems which may arise include the loss of muscle protein and increased anxiety.

    The Prevalence of Thyroid Disease

The statistics surrounding thyroid disease can be quite astounding. According to the Thyroid Foundation of America it is estimated that roughly 4.1 million men and 8 million women suffer from thyroid disease which has not been diagnosed and is not being treated. This is unfortunate as both extremes of thyroid disease can contribute to weight problems. Hyperthyroidism can cause weight loss while hypothyroidism can result in a weight gain. The weight losses and weight gains associated with thyroid disease are not usually substantial but they can be significant enough to cause a host of medical problems including increases in blood cholesterol, fatigue, depression and even cardiac arrhythmia.

Using Herbal Supplements to Treat Thyroid Disease

Many women turn to the use of herbal supplements to treat thyroid disease. Thyvox, in particular, is one such supplement which may be used to increase the level of the thyroid hormone in the system. The purpose of increasing this thyroid hormone is typically to allow for the hormone levels to stabilize to an adequate level to allow the body to shed the few excess pounds of weight the deficiency of the hormone has caused. If you are considering taking a substance such as Thyvox you should visit the following website to learn more about the supplement: www.Thyvox.com.

You should also visit your doctor to discuss the use of this or any supplements before you begin to use them. Consulting your doctor is very important because they can provide you with a great deal of information which can help you decide whether or not the use of the supplement is worthwhile in your case. They might be able to suggest another treatment option or they may be able to point out the risks associated with each treatment method so you can make an informed decision.

Using Thyroid Hormones for Weight Loss

    Article Presented by:
DBA AdPro Media Sales, All Rights Reserved Written by: Kamau Austin

Many women who are concerned about their weight often seek out simple solutions for achieving their weight loss goals. However, unfortunately there are no simple solutions to weight loss. In fact the Food and Drug Administration strongly cautions women to be suspicious of weight loss aids making outrageous claims by stating, "It is important for consumers to be wary of claims that sound too good to be true. When it comes to weight-loss schemes, consumers should be particularly skeptical of claims containing words and phrases like: easy, effortless, guaranteed, miraculous, magical, breakthrough, new discovery, mysterious, exotic, secret, exclusive, ancient." Similarly women should be aware of any unbelievable claims made by manufacturers of thyroid hormones for the purpose of weight loss.

The Theory behind Using Thyroid Hormones for Weight Loss

The thyroid hormone is closely associated with metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid produces an excess of the thyroid hormone. This excess amount of hormone has the result of increasing the metabolism and may result in weight loss. Conversely hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid is under active and produces a deficient amount of the thyroid hormone. Modest weight gain of 5-10 pounds may occur in this hormonal state.

It is the condition of hyperthyroidism which is of the most interest to women who are interested in losing weight through the use of thyroid hormone. There have been several studies which indicated the use of the thyroid hormone resulted in more weight loss than when the hormone was not used. In general more severe cases of hyperthyroidism result in greater amounts of weight loss.

The Risks of Using Thyroid Hormones for Weight Loss

While studies have indicated the use of thyroid hormone in a weight loss program resulted in greater weight loss than in programs which did not use the benefit of the thyroid hormone, it is important to note there are some risks associated with the use of thyroid hormone to lose weight. Specifically the American Thyroid Association describes these associated risks by stating, "However, once the excess thyroid hormone is stopped, the excess weight loss is usually regained. Furthermore, there may be significant negative consequences from the use of thyroid hormone to help with weight loss, such as the loss of muscle protein in addition to any loss of body fat. Pushing the thyroid hormone dose to cause thyroid hormone levels to be elevated is unlikely to significantly change weight and may result in other metabolic problems."

If you wish to investigate the use of thyroid hormones to assist you in achieving your weight loss goals, you should carefully consider the risks of these hormones. The use of synthetic hormones is certainly justifiable in the case of a legitimate hormonal excess or deficiency but when used specifically for the purposes of weight loss care should be taken to avoid creating additional medical problems. Also, it should be noted that it is possible to quickly regain the weight once the use of the hormone is stopped. A condition of hyperthyroidism creates a need for additional calories. Women who become used to eating to accommodate this condition may have a difficult time scaling back their eating habits once they are no longer using the thyroid hormone.

Using Thyroid Hormones under a Doctor's Care

In any weight loss endeavor you undertake, you should always seek out the assistance and guidance of your doctor. This is important for a number of reasons. First of all you should always consult your doctor when you are attempting to lose weight to ensure you are healthy enough to begin exercising and to make changes to your diet or begin taking supplements. Additionally, your doctor can discuss the use of supplements with you and provide a great deal of insight into the benefits and risk involved with taking these supplements.

    Herbal Supplements Containing Thyroid Hormones

Thyvox is just one of many herbal supplements which are marketed for the purpose of producing weight loss through the use of the thyroid hormone. More information on Thyvox can be found at the following web address: www.Thyvox.com. Here consumers can learn more about the substance and how it is designed to work. This information along with information obtained in a consultation with your doctor can help you determine whether or not you wish to use Thyvox in your weight loss endeavors.

    Green Tea and the Skin

    Article Presented by:
    Jon M. Stout

Natural skin care products are gaining popularity. In addition to the popularity of natural beauty products, many people are also interested in other types of green tea skin products, such as those that can be used for healing cuts and minimizing the appearance of scars. A third area of interest for botanical products is anti-aging.

You'll find numerous products on the market that are made from natural products. Some of the most popular botanicals used in skin care products include:

  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Ginger
  • Green Tea
  • Lemon
  • Grapeseed
  • Echinacea

Since products of this nature are largely unregulated by the US Food and Drug Administration, claims on the products are sometimes largely unsubstantiated. In most cases, we just have to try these products out and see for ourselves.

However, one of these products, green tea, does have some evidence to back up its claims of rejuvenating the skin and preventing aging. Several studies have shown that green tea's anti-oxidants are beneficial to the skin in several ways.

The first important fact about green tea is that its anti-oxidants act as scavengers on abnormal or damaged skin cells. This may be very important to helping protect us from skin cancer. If we can eradicate skin cells damaged by the sun immediately, they are less likely to develop abnormal qualities. Many doctors are now recommending that you wear a green tea moisturizer under your sunscreen. The sunscreen will protect your skin from most of the sun's rays, but any that do get through can be mitigated by the green tea.

However, other research has shown that green tea may even be an effective treatment for those who already have cancerous or pre-cancerous skin lesions. One study, performed on mice, showed that not only did green tea seem to scavenge the abnormal cells on the mice that did not have skin cancer, but it also concluded that green tea, whether given orally or topically, slowed the progression of the cancer. In addition, scientists theorize that green tea may be able to actually kill off some of the cancer cells.

Another recent study showed that green tea may also have the ability to provide short term improvement in the skin's appearance. The study suggested that green tea's anti-oxidants actually have the ability to rejuvenate skin cells resting on the epidermis that are dying. The green tea helps bring the cells back to life for a period, reducing that dull and lifeless appearance skin can have.

It is believed that green tea also has the ability to reduce aging over the long term. Such claims are difficult to prove, because it requires human trials over many years. However, based on the fact that research has shown that green tea's anti-oxidants have the ability to scavenge abnormal and dying skin cells, it stands to reason that using green tea regularly over a period of many years would produce a cumulative effect that would be positive for the skin's condition and appearance.

Many other botanicals that are used in skin care products do have the ability to perform some helpful functions on the skin. For example, all of the natural ingredients listed above do have anti-oxidants, so they likely are good for the skin, at least to some degree. And many are suited for specific skin ailments.

For example, lavender is calming, and can be helpful in soothing redness and rashes. Lemon is an effective astringent, and is sometimes helpful for especially oily skin. The UK Tea Council published a report outlining the effects of many botanical products and their potential to protect and treat the skin.

But, most of the products containing these ingredients have not been through strenuous laboratory testing, so their effects are undocumented. In addition, some botanical products may not require regulation by the Food and Drug Administration, so they may not meet federal health standards.

Because of the attention that green tea has received due to its likely ability to prevent cancer and other diseases, it has been more widely tested than many other botanicals. It has been widely tested for topical application to see if it has the potential to prevent or treat skin cancer, for example.

So, it's perfectly ok to use botanical products to help with any special skin conditions you're trying to treat. Most botanical products are safe, as long as you don't have an allergy to them. And, they may be helpful at treating some skin conditions and at keeping skin moisturized.

But, if you're looking for the best be in botanical products for the skin, it's likely that green tea has the most potential. It has been more widely tested than other botanicals, and is likely to be of significant benefit, both in improving skin's appearance and in preventing aging and skin cancer.

However, since, like other botanical products, green tea products may not have fallen under FDA guidelines, be sure to examine the list of ingredients carefully. You should ensure that green tea products actually contain active anti-oxidants, such as EGCG and theaflavins, before you purchase. Without these important ingredients, the products will likely not provide the benefits you're seeking.

So, give green tea a try for your skin. You may see smoother and brighter skin in the short term, and you may be preventing skin cancer and aging in the long term.

  • Preventing Breast Cancer Recurrence with Green Tea

    Article Presented by:
    Marcus Stout

In recent years, lots of research has been performed on green tea's ability to prevent and treat breast cancer. The news has been extremely promising; it appears that as we learn more, we'll eventually determine that green tea is, indeed, one of the simplest things we can do to protect breast health. Since about 13% of all American women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, breast health is a significant concern for all of us.

One study showed that tea helped to ensure that women had an appropriate level of the sex hormone binding globulin on critical days of their cycle. The level of binding globulin is important because low levels of this hormone in pre-menopausal women have been associated with a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Another study showed that one group of Chinese women who were at a higher than average risk of developing cancer, due to angiotensin activity in their blood, were able to lower their breast cancer risk by drinking green tea. This study concluded that even women who drank green tea only weekly were at a lower risk than those who drank it only monthly or not at all.

One study also showed that green tea may be able to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy in breast cancer patients. Green tea was shown to increase the concentration of chemotherapy drugs in the cancer cells, compared to women who received chemotherapy without green tea as an adjunct treatment. Green tea was also shown to slow the growth of cancer cells, suggesting that it may inhibit cancer progression and metastasis.

Green tea's anti-oxidants are what make it such a powerful health protector. The anti-oxidants in green tea have been shown to be more than 100 times as effective at neutralizing free radicals as vitamin C, and 25 times more powerful than vitamin E, both of which are well recognized as anti-oxidants. In addition, the EGCG in green tea have also been found to be more powerful than BHA, BHT and Resveratol, all of which are considered some of the most potent anti-oxidants around.

And, now there's a study that's shown that green tea may prevent breast cancer from recurring, too. This study, reported by the UK Tea Council, examined many databases that contained information about breast cancer patients and their rate of recurrence.

The study concluded that women who consumed more than 5 cups of green tea per day had a slightly lower than average risk of developing breast cancer than women who consumed a smaller amount or who did not drink green tea at all.

In addition, this study showed that women with Stages 1 and 2 breast cancer who drank green tea daily showed a decreased risk of breast cancer recurrence over women who did not drink green tea.

This is very promising news, both for women who are trying to prevent breast cancer and for women who are already battling the disease. It appears that green tea may be an important part of the treatment of breast cancer, in order to lessen the chances that the cancer will recur later.

Each recurrence of breast cancer is more difficult to treat than the previous ones, and each one increases your mortality risk from the disease. So, while prevention is critical in all women – preventing recurrence for those who are already battling the disease is just as critical.

When you combine all the evidence that's out there, it's hard to ignore the fact that green tea holds a lot of promise in the fight against breast cancer.

So, if you're at a higher than average risk for developing breast cancer, it's wise to consider adding green tea to your diet. Even if it doesn't prevent you from getting breast cancer, green tea has no side effects, and is considered to be completely safe to consume.

In addition to adding green tea to your diet, you should also take steps to ensure that you're living an overall healthy life. This means eating a healthy diet, that includes lots of fruits and vegetables (these are high in anti-oxidants just like green tea) and is low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Switch to whole grains and be certain that you're getting an adequate amount of fiber.

You should also exercise. Exercise helps burn calories and maintain a normal body weight. In addition, exercise helps build muscle and keep your body strong, which comes in handy as we age.

Finally, if you smoke, stop. We're all aware that smoking increases our risk for lung cancer, but what many people don't know is that smoking increases your overall risk of cancer. So, smoking may contribute to you having a higher risk of breast cancer, too. Smoking also contributes to heart disease.

We're learning more and more about the benefits of drinking green tea. It's likely that in a few years, we'll truly understand how this popular beverage keeps us healthy. But, in the meantime, you should get a head start on the road to health by having some green tea today and every day!

    Charlemagne Meets a Chinese Princess

    Article Presented by:
    K T Ong

Charlemagne was a powerful Frankish monarch of the late 8th and early 9th centuries AD who united virtually all of Christian Europe into a single empire which he defended vigorously against hostile foreign forces. He was also known to be a great patron of higher learning, and also improved upon the laws of the empire and their administration. After his death people started weaving colorful legends of all kinds regarding him and his paladins, raising them to the status of mythical figures along the lines of King Arthur.

The legends were eventually to be collected into long written works, one of them being the epic poem "Orlando Furioso" or "The Madness of Roland" (Roland/Orlando being Charlemagne's favorite nephew and also one of his paladins), composed by the Italian poet Ariosto in the 15th century. The 19th century American scholar Thomas Bullfinch also undertook a retelling of many of the legends in his "Bullfinch's Mythology: The Legends of Charlemagne". The stories range all the way from the British Isles to the Middle East and to China, even right up to the moon (!), and contain all sorts of stuff like angels, fairies, terrible monsters, fantastic creatures, sorcerers and sorceresses, fabulous cities and palaces, magical items and weapons, and, of course, great warriors and battles.

Now according to the legends, one day while Charlemagne and his men were feasting in his court he was visited by a Cathayan princess of dazzling beauty by the name of Angelica! :D Almost every man in Charlemagne's court lost his mind over her, including the king himself (I'm sure the queen would be fuming with rage :)); his nephew Orlando, in particular, was to fall so hopelessly in love with her that, upon discovering later that she had gone off with another man, he eventually went totally insane, destroying animals, houses and people wherever he went - hence the title "Orlando Furioso", the Madness of Roland. To think that some Frankish dude from medieval times could fall for a Chinese lady to such a degree! Another paladin, Astolpho, had to travel all the way to the moon to retrieve Orlando's lost sanity!

Now why would any princess from China want to visit Europe in the 8th or 9th century? According to the legends, Angelica's father, Galafron (it's hilarious what sort of names early European writers came up with for the Chinese), harbored evil intentions against Christendom, his daughter being precisely one of his main chess pieces! Well, it's seriously doubtful any Chinese emperor during Charlemagne's time (there were four successive emperors in China whose period of rule overlapped with his; one of them reigned for only one year if not less) would have known much of him and the Holy Roman Empire at all, let alone seek its downfall. What had China to gain? :)

Perhaps a more likely reason (relatively speaking) for any Chinese of royal parentage to embark on a trip to Europe during those times could be to establish friendly trade relations and to propagate Buddhism - which at that time was at the height of its influence in China - though that would still have been a most unlikely historical event as Europe was just too far away from China (and had little to offer that interested the Chinese, besides :p). Even if a missionary journey to Europe did take place, the Franks with their Christian mindset would probably have misunderstood Buddhism as an evil, pagan doctrine and viewed the Chinese accordingly as a threat to Christendom, as in the legends! One wonders what interesting events might have transpired in consequence!

While there would have been equally little reason for any European during Charlemagne's time to travel to China, this did occur in the legends, where the traffic between Cathay and Christendom was not exclusively westward. Thus we read that at one point Galafron, the king of Cathay, was besieged in his city, Albracca, by the forces of a hostile neighboring kingdom. Presumably, Albracca would be another name for Ch'ang-an, the name of China's capital city during Charlemagne's time! Learning of the siege, Orlando, Astolpho and other knights under Charlemagne were to journey all the way from their home turf to offer the Cathayans assistance in defeating the aggressors. Quite evidently Charlemagne and his men were an incredibly generous lot in dispensing military aid, to be willing to go to the trouble of traveling all the way to a remote, alien land in the East to lend a hand in fighting her intruders - especially considering just what the ruler of this land actually sought to procure from our heroes! One wonders, though: what magical, super-fast means of travel did they have at their disposal, considering how little time they appeared to have spent in their journey to Cathay (and back)? Indeed by what similar means did news of Cathay's predicament reach them in the first place? :)

Incidentally, the legends also had it that Angelica was escorted by four giants while visiting Charlemagne. Now in Buddhist mythology there were indeed four Diamond Kings of Heaven - T'ien-wang in Chinese or Lokapala in Sanskrit - who were charged with the task of defending the Buddhist Law, each one of them corresponding to one of the four cardinal directions and reigning over a special race or species of supernatural creatures. They were enormously popular in China as well during Charlemagne's time. Could they be the four giants? Was this a coincidence or did the medieval European authors actually know something of Buddhist mythology? :) Certainly the four Diamond Kings professed a serious interest in the propagation of Buddhism, and had that been indeed the purpose of the princess' visit they would naturally have offered her whatever assistance they could!

The imagined (?) interaction of different cultures in history certainly can open up a whole wide world of fun and exciting possibilities. We have but touched on a few of these in the context of the Charlemagne cycle of legends. What other possibilities might there be, and what else besides the above did the creators of the Charlemagne cycle come up with? It is left to the reader to find out!

    A Step-By-Step Guide To Installing a Toilet

    Article Presented by:
    Cecil Radmore

Replacing a toilet might seem difficult, but if you knew how easy it really was, you would not even bother calling the plumber.

You only need four tools to get the job done right: a small wrench, a socket set, a flat-head screwdriver, and a level. You might also need a scraper and an old towel.

In a pinch, you can use two adjustable wrenches in place of the small wrench and socket set, although using the right tools to do the job will make the job much easier to complete... I started to say "crescent(r) wrenches" until I realized that Crescent(r) is actually a brand of adjustable wrenches and other tools, owned by Cooper Hand Tools, a division of Cooper Industries, Inc. Here is a clear case of the brand name becoming universally utilized as a generic product description.

Parts Necessary For Your Toilet Installation

You will need to get the toilet bowl, toilet tank, toilet flange bolts, and we recommend a kitchen/bath silicone caulk. If you have uneven floors or tile floors, you might also need some rubber shims. Since the wax bowl ring only costs a couple of bucks, I would recommend that you replace it too. You should get the one with the plastic flange attached to it.

    Pulling Up Your Old Toilet

The first thing you want to do when you are pulling your old toilet up is to cut off the water supply. In most cases, you will be able to do that from a water shut-off valve at the floor level below your toilet. Once you have closed off the water supply, then you will want to loosen the water supply line where it enters the base of your toilet tank.

You will be able to flush out most of the water in your toilet tank and basin, but you will never get all of the water out. So, it is good practice to have an old towel lying around to soak up the small amount of water that will spill when you take out your old toilet.

You will want to detach your toilet seat and toilet lid before you haul your old toilet out of the house. That is done by loosening the nuts directly below the hinge on your seat, from below the porcelain of the toilet.

At the floor level, you will see two plastic caps that will need to be removed so that you can get to the nuts below. Once you have removed these nuts, your toilet should come straight up.

Preparing The Area For Your New Toilet

When you pull up the old toilet, you will find a wax bowl ring on the floor.

This is the only part of the task that can get messy. When you pull up the wax ring, you might have some of the wax stuck to the floor. You will need to scrape up this old wax. Your old towel comes in handy here as well, since you can use it to clean the wax from your scraper, so you don't have to get the wax on your hands.

If you are putting new toilet flange bolts in, now is the time to do that. The heads of the bolts have two flat sides and two rounded sides. Turn them sideways to get them into the flange, and then turn them where the cornered sides are under the lip of the flange. With your new flange bolts set, there will be a plastic piece with a cross cut from the middle. You should slide this over the bolt and push is towards the floor. This will keep your flange bolts from sliding out of position.

Prepare Your Toilet Bowl For Placement

Take your toilet bowl out of the box, and place it upside down on the floor.

At this point, you should put the level on the floor to make sure that you are dealing with a level surface. If you are not dealing with a level surface, you will need to use the rubber shims to stabilize your toilet once it is put it in place. You can use masking tape to fasten the rubber shims to the base circumference of your toilet.

If you have a tile floor, you will want to use the rubber shims to keep your toilet from moving or swiveling after you have set it in place. Any movement of the toilet bowl after you have set it in place might break the seal of your wax ring. If your seal is broken, you will run the risk of having sewer gas leak back into your bathroom, or you will find that your toilet leaks unclean water onto your floor.

Once you have applied the shims to the bottom of your toilet, you will want to place the wax bowl ring on the base of your toilet. The plastic part that drops below the wax is supposed to go into the hole in your floor that leads to the sewage drain, so apply it to the base of your toilet bowl facing away from the toilet.

The last step you will want to take before affixing the toilet bowl to the floor is to put some kind of marker down to show you where the toilet flange bolts are located. The last thing you want to be doing is to be hovering the toilet above the floor wondering where the bolts are so that you can drop the toilet in the right spot the first time. Whether you put a couple screwdrivers on the floor pointing to the flange bolts or put a pencil mark on the floor is up to you, so long as you leave yourself a way to make a visual alignment from above the toilet.

    Executing Your Bowl Plan

Once you get through this next step, it is all down hill from here. It is now time to flip your toilet bowl over and then to slowly guide it onto the toilet flange bolts.

If you put good markers on the floor to remind you where the bolts are located, you should be able to put the holes over the bolts on your very first try. From personal experience, I can tell you that not marking off where your bolts are located will lead to many headaches.

Once you have your toilet bowl on the floor, gently press it to the floor. Sitting on your new toilet is often a good choice. If you sense a wobble in your toilet, you may need to affix additional rubber shims to level your toilet. You do not want to lift the toilet back off the floor unless you have another wax bowl ring handy. I also learned that from the school of hard knocks.

At this point, you will want to put the plastic piece with the square hole onto your bolt on top of the porcelain, then put the washer on, and finally start your nuts on the bolts.

As you put on the nuts, twist them down to just above the porcelain, and then turn each just a few turns before going to the other side. The point is that each side needs to be tightened just a little bit at a time. This is important because you do not want to over-tighten the nuts causing the flange or porcelain to break.

    Attaching The Toilet Tank

In most cases, there will be a rubber gasket attached to the bottom of the tank. Just slip the tank onto the top of the toilet bowl, lining up the three holes on the tank with the three holes on the bowl.

If the tank did not have a rubber gasket on the bottom of it that also surrounded the boltholes, the tank will come with rubber gaskets to be affixed to your bolts before sliding them into the holes from inside the toilet tank. Just slide the bolts into the holes from the top.

Put your level on top of the tank to help you guide the tightness of your nuts. You will want to make sure that when you are done, your toilet tank is level.

Put the washers on the bottom side of the bolts, and then start the nuts on your bolts. Once again, you will want to tighten each of the three nuts a little bit at a time, so that you do not break the bowl or the tank. Use your flat head screwdriver to hold the bolt in place as you tighten the nuts.

    Final Steps...

We only have three easy steps remaining. First, you need to reattach the water supply to the fitting on the bottom of the tank. Do turn on the water to make sure that you do not have any leaks.

Next, put a bead of your kitchen/bathroom silicone caulk around the front and sides of your toilet. You want to leave the back open in the event that the wax seal breaks at some point. Leaving that area open will allow you to notice a problem, before damage is done to the floor under the toilet.

And finally, you will want to put your toilet seat back on your toilet.

    Ready For Use

You are now ready to use your new toilet. Most people can complete this job in just under an hour.

In Broad Daylight--Who Killed Ken McElroy?

    Article Presented by:
    Harry N. MacLean

The killing of Ken Rex McElroy could well be the hottest cold case on record. On the morning of July 10, 1981, he was shot to death as he sat in his pickup on the main street of Skidmore, Missouri. Forty-five townspeople witnessed the killing. All denied seeing the shooters. After three grand juries and an eight-month FBI investigation, no one was indicted. Twenty-five years later, still no one has been charged with the murder.

In December 2006, St. Martin's Press re-released In Broad Daylight, the story of McElroy's incredible reign of terror, his killing, and the aftermath. The new epilogue contains startling information about the identity of McElroy's killers and the killing itself.

In the spring of 2006, I obtained unprecedented access to the state police and FBI files on the killing. The files contain a hand-written statement from an eyewitness which corroborates in detail McElroy's wife's identification a local rancher as the first shooter. The statement also identified for the first time a local farmer as the second shooter. The statement is detailed and convincing. Interestingly, the eyewitness appeared at the sheriff's office the following day in the company of the local rancher's lawyer and recanted the statement. Despite this, the statement, combined with Trena's identification, stands as convincing evidence of the identity of the shooters.

The files also dispel a great myth about the killing. The media seized on the notion that the entire town had killed Ken McElroy, characterizing it as a vigilante killing, or an example of vigilante justice. My interviews, and the numerous statements in the files, make it clear that, other than the two shooters, the men on the street that day were not part of a plan to kill Ken McElroy. They were involuntary witnesses to a murder.

I believe that the killing of Ken Rex McElroy will long remain the hottest cold case on record. No one---not law enforcement, not McElroy's family or friends, and certainly not the residents of Skidmore---seems to care that his killers remain at large. The men on the street that day are bound in a silence that is immune to the passage of time or the glare of the spotlight. In their view, while murder might be a sin, what Ken McElroy did to the town and its residents, to young girls and old men, was unspeakably evil. It would be a far greater sin to turn the men who brought the nightmare to an end over to the very justice system that had failed the community for so many years.

I lived in the town for three years while researching the book. When I first arrived, I had doors slammed in my face, a shotgun pulled on me, and I was bitten by a dog. By the time I left, I was judging dance contests at the annual Punkin' Show and selling tickets to the Mother's Day bazaar at the local Methodist Church. I became quite attached to the town and the people, and I stayed in touch over the years.

Personally, my sympathy has always lain with the townspeople, although it bothers me as a member of civilized society that the two killers remain unpunished for their crime. I doubt, however, that any good would come of the prosecution of the men. A prosecutor would be hard pressed to find a jury of twelve Nodaway County citizens who would convict anyone of McElroy's murder. Memories remain strong and hearts unforgiving, and even the youngsters in the area know well the story of Ken McElroy. When I was back in Skidmore for the one-year anniversary of the killing of Bobbi Jo Stinnett---the young pregnant housewife who was strangled and her baby ripped from her womb---I asked two girls what they knew of Ken McElroy.

"He was a bad guy, who bullied lots of people," the older of the two said.

"He was shot here in town," the younger one joined in. "Right over there." She pointed to the tavern.

"He had it coming," the older one said.

Ken Rex was much more than a town bully. He had all of Northwest Missouri terrorized. Even the cops and judges were scared of him. Maybe, as the townspeople say, he needed killing; the main regret seems to be the way he was finished.

"The guys who did it deserve a medal," one local told me. "But they should be strung up for the way they did it."
